The Highway Engineering Exchange Program ESP program is designed to build closer ties with educators and students interested in the field of transportation engineering, and especially the use of information systems technology in that field. Active educator and student participation ensures that information flows in both directions: what are the practitioners doing, and what are the educators and researchers doing. Educators and students are encouraged to participate in area meetings and international meetings.
How does the Program Work?
Who Can Participate? Student presenters should be at the junior, senior or graduate level, and capable of accepting a commitment for the following fall if selected as the area winner. Each area's student winner will be assigned an area HEEP mentor that ensures the student's preparations for the international HEEP meeting, assists in making travel arrangements, and arranges an introduction to HEEP and its members at the international meeting. The mentor will be responsible for contacting the second, or subsequent place, winner, if the primary winner cannot attend the international HEEP meeting. Educators and students are invited to attend area meetings on the day of student paper presentations at no charge. How Can the Educator Help? The educator can assign a faculty member to be responsible for pre-screening and selecting student presenters, assuring student paper topics are pertinent to HEEP members, escorting students to the area meeting and assuring that registration is completed for all educator and student attendees. Students do not have to be presenters to attend. Educators can, and should become associate HEEP members, and placed on the membership rolls. It is at the discretion of the area director and secretary how many educational institutions are contacted for any given area meeting. As area meetings move from state to state annually, the benefits to HEEP will continue to grow. Why Should Educators and Students Consider This Program? Educators - This is a great way to introduce students to the working worlds of Transportation Engineering and Information Systems Technology, and to build a tie between your educational facility and industry.
